Patrice Hulman : a voice with a future

 The biography  of an artist  is just like a  family tree that should be explored if  one  wants to understand something of  his  past . The  one of Patrice Hulman, from the island of Marie Galante a commun of  Guadeloupe in the French West Indies  does illustrate  this simple equation .

The general public first  discovered him in 2008 with the title "Chabine".He played a duet with rapper Misié GG alias Fuckly. Three years ago, Patrice Hulman  made his career and he proved  that he already acquired a  solid experience in his singing trade.

His  native town is  Saint Louis of  Marie-Galante. This very  place was his natural conservatory. That  is where  he nourished his passion for singing. While he was on the benches of the senior high  school, he became one of the co-founder of the group Kwebee. Their original formula proved to be efficient  as it prepared   a capella  artists on an island where a  singer’s voice has to blend with the rhythm and sounds of  drums in the traditional gwo ka. ( the traditional music of Guadeloupe  with drums and singers following a call and response pattern).

Within this training, Patrice  worked  hard on  vocal techniques to increase the range of his voice and adapt to the harmonies. So he started to be known by participating   in the early parts of concerts with Kwebee and very rapidly with prestigious artists such as Kassav, Malavoi, Jean Jacques Goldman, Jacques Higelin, or Trio Esperanza among others.

Today,  looking  back on   his itinerary, he said : "my musical influences are varied. The piano bars helped to make up somewhat  the artist I am today. That's when I expanded my repertoire into jazz, music improvisation, variety American and French "

In 1994 and 2003, Paskal Vallot, a talent scout, called on him to entrust him with leading roles in musicals. First in "Fate" Opera Zouk, and then in "The street Zabym" which was a big success  with  three consecutive seasons of record-breaking West Indies and Guiana entries. All his experiences also allowed him to win as professional singer in the studio and live. According to the band leader of  SOFT, Fred Deshayes, Patrice Hulman was considered a "reference" by the popular singer of the group KASSAV, Patrick St. Eloi, who died recently following a long illness.

Patrice Hulman did not stop working to reach his goal. break . Being humble, he did not  hesitate to open trade with other artists  from Guadeloupe. He contributed to the  production of an album of beguine "Proposal" Jean Max Mirval, and  but also of another one,  "Ti moun lafrik " conceived by  Christian Laviso,  an excellent guitarist  of  gwoka. "I remain,"he said, deeply rooted in Caribbean music: zouk (first!), the gwo ka, beguine and the compass ... All these experiences taught me to share the love of stage performance and generosity towards the public "

Then came the time to harvest . 2009 saw the  release of his highly expected  first album history. The single "Baby mwen pé pa" propelled  him to the forefront. On April 24, 2010  he won  a SACEM  award( French  version of Performing Rights Society for Music) for best male performer.

Earlier this year in Casino de Paris , singing in  concerts” Talents Guadeloupe” Patrice Hulman  offered a remarkable performance thus confirming  his ability to have a promising future in the Caribbean, Africa and Europe.

Patrice Hulman, une voix d’avenir

La biographie des artistes  est  un véritable arbre généalogique qu’il faut explorer si on veut comprendre quelque chose  à leur filiation. Celle de Patrice Hulman, de l’île de Marie Galante  en Guadeloupe dans les Antilles françaises ne déroge pas  à la règle.

Le grand public le découvre  en 2008 grâce au titre « Chabine » qu’il interprète en duo avec le rappeur Misié GG alias Fuckly. Il y a  trois ans, Patrice Hulman   fait déjà ses  premières armes  et il affiche avec une solide expérience de son métier.

Son berceau c’est la commune  natale de Saint Louis de Marie-Galante. C’est le même lieu qui lui sert de conservatoire. C’est là qu’il s'exprime et qu'il nourrit sa passion pour le chant. Alors qu’il est sur les bancs du lycée,  il devient  un des co-fondateurs du groupe Kwebee.  Leur formule originale se révèle  car elle prépare des chanteurs a capella dans  des îles ou le chanteur tutoie les tambours, dans le gwo ka traditionnel.

Au sein cette formation, Patrice effectue un travail assidu sur la technique vocale pour augmenter la tessiture de sa voix et s’adapter aux   harmonies. Il émerge sur la scène  dans les premières parties de concerts   avec Kwebee  et très rapidement avec des artistes prestigieux comme Kassav, Malavoi, Jean Jacques Goldman, Jaques Higelin, ou le Trio Esperanza entre autres.

Aujourd’hui, il revient sur son itinéraire « Mes influences musicales sont diverses. Les pianos bars ont en partie forgés l’artiste que je suis aujourd’hui. C’est là que j’ai élargi mon répertoire en passant par le jazz, les musiques d’improvisation, la variété américaine et française."

En 1994 puis en 2003, Paskal Vallot, un chasseur de talents,  fait appel à lui pour lui confier des rôles principaux dans ses comédies musicales. Tout d’abord dans «Fatalita » l’Opéra Zouk, et ensuite dans « La rue Zabym» qui pendant trois saisons d’affilée bat tous les records d’entrées aux Antilles-Guyane. Toutes ses expériences lui permettent de  s’imposer aussi en tant que choriste professionnel en studio et en live. Selon  le leader du groupe SOFT,  Fred Deshayes, Patrice HULMAN   était considéré comme « une référence «  par le  chanteur  très populaire du groupe KASSAV, Patrick Saint Eloi, mort récemment des suites d’une longue maladie.

Patrice Hulman  ne relâche son effort. Faisant preuve d’humilité, il  n’hésite pas à s’ouvrir aux échanges avec d’autres artistes Guadeloupéens. C’est ainsi qu’on le retrouve aussi bien l’album de biguine « Proposition » de Jean Max Mirval, que sur le « Ti moun a lafrik » de Christian Laviso, excellent  guitariste de gwoka. .
 « Je reste,  dit-il , profondément ancré dans la musique caribéenne : le zouk (avant tout !), le gwo ka, la biguine et le compas...Toutes ces expériences m’ont appris le partage, l’amour de la scène et la générosité envers le public ».


C’est alors le temps de la récolte. L’année  2009 marque la sortie très attendue de son tout premier album. le single « Baby mwen pé pa »  le propulse au devant de la scène. Le 24 Avril 2010 il reçoit ainsi  le prix Sacem du meilleur interprète masculin 2010. Patrice Hulman  donne rendez-vous  à ses fans  le  02 juillet prochain sur la scène mythique du New Morning pour vous présenter son nouvel album et chanter pour eux  ses tubes "On Nonm Selman","Baby Mwen Pe Pa"....

En début d’année au Casino de  Paris, à l’occasion des concerts Talents Guadeloupe Patrice Hulman  a  offert une remarquable prestation   qui confirme son avenir prometteur  dans la Caraïbe , en Afrique et en Europe .

Daniel Gardiole, a young west indian pianist springs out of Paris suburbs

The Cathedral of Holy Cross Armenian hosted young artists as well as established talents in what is called HEURE MUSICALE au MARAIS  (music  hour of Marais).

These are free concerts with a small financial contribution from the public organized every weekend in June, July, August at  6 rue Charlot in the 3rd arrondissement of Paris.

The day of Pentecost was the occasion to discover a young caribbean concert pianist with exceptional talent at his fingertips, 24 year-old Daniel Gardiole.

Daniel Gardiole was selected by the well – known newspaper Le Monde  for the presentation of young artists from the suburbs in 2006. Paying tribute to Paul Loyonnet he played "Histoire” by Jacques Ibert and  also a Sonata written in 1926 Lucien Durosoir. This is a violinist who dedicated himself to composition at the end of his career after the second world war. These works contain complex scores that demand all the virtuosity of a pianist.

The sonata “ Aube Sonate d’été” by Lucien Durosoir is so complex and requires a technique so brilliant and acrobatic that  it would take almost a third hand to Daniel to play with more ease.

It was  a pleasure for me to discover this young concert pianist of Caribbean origin who has the makings of a great musician. In my capacity as a journalist born in Guadeloupe, I commemorate my way this year 2011 dedicated to french overseas  regions and territories ( l’année de l’Outremer) and the International Year of African descent.

 I seek to enhance and highlight those, especially young people who want to earn their spurs because they have talent and skills and also because they want to be respected. There are  not just in sports. They  also exist in the arts and letters but also in areas not always accessible to black people for many years.
